About this session
Attendance has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. This is of concern to schools, parents, the DfE and OFSTED.
Pupils out of school are more at risk of poor mental health, social isolation, reduced self-esteem and poorer academic achievement.
There is also a risk of a negative impact on the resilience of the whole family. Children and young people who experience EBSA describe it as ‘not-coping’ with school to the extent that non-attendance feels like their only option. The longer a CYP is out of school the harder it can be for them to return (in general).
Research highlights the importance of an individualised approach as the factors affecting EBSA vary significantly between individuals – Early identification and intervention is key.
This session explores the terminology we use to describe a child who is avoiding school and provides a structured approach and strategies that parents and practitioners can collaborate on to support a child back into school.
