It provides component elements that are the foundations for basic writing including supported sentence construction, the composition of simple and more complex sentences as well as integrating writing strategies.

Research based

The programme has been developed from research-based practice with a proven impact on progress for reading and writing, with average gains of 16.5 months*

What teachers are saying about Literacy Junction

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Literacy Junction work?
The programme begins with a thorough assessment of the pupil’s reading and writing and is delivered via a daily 20-minute intervention. These daily sessions consist of two parts, Reading and Writing.
These can be delivered in a one 20-minute session or separate 10-minute sessions to suit the pupil and /or the setting. The person trained to deliver Literacy Junction should be the same person who carries out the assessment and delivers the programme.
Literacy Junction is rooted in research-based strategies that SEND Station has expertise and experience in developing and delivering; including Alphabet Arc and Precision Teaching. These strategies support both Reading and Writing. The intervention provides a multi-sensory structured approach that compliments phonics teaching and better supports pupils who may struggle with a purely phonics-based approach.

Developmental Language Disorder might be an issue for the child which will need to be investigated by a speech and language therapist.  Literacy Junction is not designed to support those young people who have a specific language disorder.
If highlighter pen strategy has been unsuccessful and no improvements have been seen, seek advice from an Occupational Therapist.
Yes, all the strategies used in Literacy Junction are strategies that can be used with Dyslexic individuals and are known to be highly effective.
Yes, the programme has been designed based on the research that ‘little and often’ has the greatest impact on pupil progress.  To reduce the number of sessions per week will reduce the impact of the programme.   It is important that the person who conducts the assessment is the same person who conducts the intervention.
The consistency of one member of staff getting to know the young person well is key to the success of the programme.  Qualitative data from the pilot indicated that it was the building up of the relationship between adult and young person was the key to the young person becoming confident and more skilled with literacy.
No, it is imperative that the person completing the assessment is the one delivering the intervention as they have observed the performance of the young person during the assessment session/s.
Parents could be involved with the practice of maintenance sight words and practice of pure sounds learnt to fluency as well as strategies to support reading, for example, pause, prompt, praise, however, there is no expectation that parents will be trained to deliver the intervention.  There may be a case where a parent feels confident and has the skills to deliver the intervention.  This is perfectly acceptable providing they have trained themselves in the intervention by purchasing a user license.
Ideally, we would suggest the intervention starts within one week of the assessment session being completed.
Re-assess after the 10-week period to ascertain progress and continue, if necessary, until a young person reaches year 3 expected requirements.  If a child achieves a reading age of 8 years, you have successfully completed the programme.
